LOCATION
130Km south of
Izmir and 15Km from the
town of Soke.
A terraced ancient city halfway up a marble cliff, part of the Mykale mountains.
Originally Priene, along with Miletos, Heraklia and Myus was one
of a ring of Greek harbor towns around the Gulf of Latmia. Located on the
Buyuk Mendere flood plain, the constant silting of the river has resulted
in the sea receding several kilometers from these former ports.
Priene is an early example of town planning under limiting conditions,
and follows the colonial planning system of Hippodamos and
Miletos.
