Turkey is a large and diverse country where people have lived for more than 8000 years. The city of Catalhoyuk in south western Turkey is the second-oldest town in the world, dating back to the sixth millennium BC.
It is little wonder then that Turkey has a vast number
of historical sites spanning many millennia, even the Hittite Empire
(1900BC) was relatively 'modern' compared to the early days of civilized
Turkey. Since then Turkey has been ruled by Persians, Greeks, Lydians
and Romans. A thousand years ago the Crusader armies crossed Turkey
followed by the Ottoman Empire which ruled until 1909. Kemal Ataturk,
the founder of modern Turkey established the current republic in 1923.
Turkey is a mountainous country and the scenery changes quickly as you move away from the rugged pine forests around the coast onto the central plateau. Rural villages are little changed from fifty years ago while the cities are as modern as any in Europe. One thing that is common wherever you go in Turkey is the hospitality of the Turkish people.
It is possible to see most of the famous sights in Turkey during a two week touring holiday which could also include a mini-cruise aboard one of Turkeys famous wooden Gulets. We have included some typical 'first visit to Turkey' touring itinerary links at the bottom of this page.
Today's political borders were very different in the past and the great empires that have come and gone in the Aegean region were spread across modern day Turkey and Greece. Despite the fact that cross-border formalities for Turkish people wishing to visit Greece are still very difficult, there are usually very few difficulties for most tourists visiting Turkey to enter Greece. There are now regular ferry and cruise ship connections between Turkey and Greece and we are now able to arrange both customized and organized tours of the Greek islands of Kos and Samos.
