CESME 26.30N 38.30E. The name Cesme means fountain, and the city was so named because of the number of springs in the area. The Cesme peninsula extends from Izmir westwards into the blue waters of the Aegean Sea. Always popular with the inhabitants of nearby Izmir, Cesme has been attracting an ever growing number of tourists from Europe. The many unspoiled bays and isolated beaches in the area are ideal for those whose idea of a holiday is to relax in the sun, swim, windsurf or do as little as possible. In order to avoid the maritime congestion in Izmir, Cesme has over the last few years become the main international seaport for ferries arriving from Italy and other ports in Europe. A new 6 lane highway from the port connects Cesme quickly with Izmir and points north and south. There is also a daily ferry service during the summer between Cesme and the nearby Greek Island of Chios.
