CANAKKALE 40.10N 26.40E. Altitude: Sea level. (Ancient Assos 150m). The city of Canakkale lies on the southern side of the narrow Strait of the Dardanelles that connects the Sea of Marmara with the Aegean Sea. Canakkale is a ferry port connecting Europe to the Asian Continent to the south as well as a popular stopping point for yachts navigating the straits. The many hotels, cafes and restaurants along the promenade, enjoy splendid views of Kilitbahir Fortress and the Canakkale Archaeological Museum as well as welcome business from the passing travelers. In the fifteenth century, Sultan Mehmet II built fortresses on each side of the strait to control the passage of ships. The predominance of war graves in the region bear witness to the importance of the strategic location of the region. Heading west and south from Istanbul to see the many interesting sights along the Aegean coast, will inevitably bring you to Canakkale.
